Astrophysics is the science of stars, galaxies, and the universe. Here are the five things that matter:

1. Stars Are Nuclear Reactors

Stars are massive balls of hot gas powered by nuclear fusion. Inside, hydrogen turns into helium, releasing enormous energy. Our Sun is a star, and it's been doing this for 4.6 billion years.

Why it matters: Everything heavier than helium in your body was made inside a star.

2. Galaxies Are Cities of Stars

A galaxy is billions of stars held together by gravity. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, has 100-200 billion stars. There are billions of galaxies in the observable universe.

Why it matters: The universe is incomprehensibly large.

3. Black Holes Are Gravity Extreme

A black hole is a region where gravity is so strong that nothing escapes—not even light. They form when massive stars collapse. The boundary is called the event horizon.

Why it matters: Black holes test the limits of physics and reveal how extreme the universe can be.

4. The Big Bang Started Everything

The universe began 13.8 billion years ago as an extremely hot, dense point and has been expanding ever since. Not an explosion in space—an expansion of space itself.

5. Most of the Universe is Unknown

95% of the universe is made of dark matter and dark energy. We don't know what they are. This is the frontier of modern physics.
